About the lodge
The reserve is located in KwaZulu-Natal, about 260km from Durban. It is home to Africa’s Big-5 and spans 14,000 hectares of absolutely pristine bushveld. It opened its doors in May 2004, and so recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Thanda Safari is a bit of a drive from Johannesburg and so being greeted by the warm smiles of the staff on arrival, felt like a comforting embrace after all of that time in the car. Sipping on welcome cocktails, we felt the stresses of the journey melt away, replaced by a sense of excitement for the adventures that awaited us. A really thoughtful touch awaited us in our suites: completely delicious pasta dishes! This was so clever – we had arrived too late for lunch but our needs were so carefully met that we could not help feeling special. It also allowed us to refuel before our first exhilarating game drive.
Nestled within the embrace of the African wilderness, Thanda Safari Lodge unveiled its opulent suites, each a sanctuary of luxury and serenity. The circular design, a homage to Zulu culture, seamlessly blends traditional aesthetics with modern comfort. Dining at Thanda was a feast for the senses, where each meal was a culinary masterpiece. The desserts, in particular, were a symphony of flavors, tantalizing our taste buds with every bite. Our South African braai under the stars was a spectacle of fire and flavor, while the outdoor bush breakfast indulged our senses with a decadent spread of delights. The aroma of home-baked bread lingered in the air, a testament to Thanda's dedication to culinary excellence.
